6 WAYS TO SET UP A HOME OFFICE AS AN ENTREPRENEUR.
”The post-crisis recovery in entrepreneurial activity remains mixed across countries, but new data released today by the OECD provides tentative signs of a turning point, with trends in enterprise creation rates pointing upwards in most economies.” -OECD 2016
What the above sentence means is that there is a huge surge in startups and entrepreneurship in recent times. A lot of small businesses have opened up and even new ones are trying to start and one of the challenges of these businesses is capital. A number of entrepreneurs barely have enough capital to start their business.
In the studies carried out, it was shown that Nigeria has a high rate of entrepreneurs compared to other African countries and studies also show that most of these businesses are run and operated from home, not for lackadaisical reasons but because these entrepreneurs simply do not have enough capital to cover rent.
This post is just to open the eyes of entrepreneurs who run their businesses from home on how to set-up and maintain a home office that enhances productivity.
Position your desk beside a window or NOT:
This was asserted by Pablo Fuentes, CEO, Proven. He said ”since I started working remotely, my desk has been placed beside a window facing a garden and lots of greenery.” But because we are in Nigeria and the way some of our houses are built aren’t always the best and we are not all living in luxury (we do not all have gardens or any form of green whatsoever), I’ll suggest instead that you place your desk beside your window only if that window does not open to the main road where you can easily be distracted by passers by or to a part of the compound where your neighbors children play. Position your window in the best part of the room where you know you love sitting most of the times.
De-clutter your space:
Remove anything from your home office space that is not needed at the moment. If you have not opened it in a while, then it needs filling. Simple! Why have files of past projects on your desk when you are done with it and on to the next already? Learn to file documents away.
Do not share your office space with your living room space:
Lots of entrepreneurs get it wrong here by sharing their parlor space with their home office, they say they are too focused on their goals to get distracted and when i hear this i just YIMU and SMH at their ignorance. Focus is different from deliberately placing yourself in harms way. Picture someone who goes to sleep in the middle of the express and when asked says ”I am too focused on this sleep to be hit by a car”, won’t you look at that person like an insane one? that’s exactly what it sounds like.
Place real greenery in your home office:
Plants are more than just decorations, they freshen the air and help clear the air of harmful toxins. You don’t need to have a green thump to have a plant. You can purchase plants like aloe-Vera and spider plants from local horticulturists and place them somewhere in your home office where they can receive sunlight daily while you only have to water.
Use floating shelves for extra storage:
Floating shelves are inexpensive and easy to install. Plus, they give you an opportunity to display the things you care about. Floating shelves are an excellent alternative to a bulky bookcase. At this stage, your home office space is at a premium.
Hang up a positive mantra:
Wall arts are everyone’s favorite. Pick up some really nice and positive wall arts. Give your brain the positive boost you need early in the morning. Overcome daily challenges with positive words you look at. You could write up some positive declarations by yourself and have it framed. You could check some in our store from 5k upward.
